How to Choose a Comfortable Couch

More than a seat, it is also our home theatre seat, reading corner, gathering area

When you buy a couch, take three basic information with you: the measurements of the living room, its distribution and, although it may seem obvious to say so, how many people will use it daily. If you go to a physical store, try different models. It is essential to try different sitting styles, apart from choosing fixed or removable seats, motorised ones, etc.

On the other hand, if you decide to buy a couch online, take a good look at the measurements, check the seller and check if the couch has opinions from other buyers; they will help you to decide.

Keys to find out if the couch you choose is comfortable

  • Yours hips: When sitting, your hips should never be more sunken than your knees so that it is not difficult for you to sit up.
  • With your feet on the floor: When you support your back against the back of the couch, you should also support your feet on the floor.
  • Lumbar area: With the back supported on the backrest, the kidneys must be protected by preventing the body from sliding down.
  • Attention to your knees: When sitting down, the edge of the seat should not press on the back of your knee.
  • Do not forget the armrest: You should support the arm on the armrest, which will have to be at elbow height, not lower.

The filling and the fabric

For a couch to be comfortable, it should not be soft or hard. For example, high-resistance foams are used that deform little. However, as a general rule, the backrest should be softer than the seat. Memory foam, springs or HR polyurethane foam, which has excellent strength and durability and does not deform very little, are the usual options. The backs must be made of feather, high recovery silicone hollow fibre or HR foam. It is advisable to change the foam fillings every 5-6 years to regain density and not lose comfort.

Another factor that determines the strength of the couch is that it is breathable. And for that, upholstery is basic. The more breathable it is, the more comfort it will give. Also, the filling will be key for it to breathe. Which is the best? For the seats, the goose or duck feather for its comfort –although its price is high–. The combination of the couch with the cushions is also important: choose them comfortable, better in feathers, and adapt well to your back.
