Discovering The Fascinating Chinese Architecture

You will indeed be left in awe if you look at any traditional Chinese architecture. The architecture is intricate, and the symmetrical design, gilded animals, gorgeous curved roofs make any Chinese structure stand out from the western world. Yet, all of these architectural element has some meaning of their own. The architecture of China is deeply tangled with its history, tradition, and culture.

What makes it all fascinating is that even today, 4000 years after discovering the first principles, the traditions are still intact and are eminent in the Chinese structures. So let’s get to know about the features of the architecture of China.

1. Symmetrical & Asymmetrical

If you have come across Chinese structures, you must have noticed they follow a unique pattern of symmetry and asymmetry. For any residential building, the structures were constructed on a north-south axis and had two wings that depict the concept of bilateral symmetry. However, the opposite is seen in structures for gardens and courtyards, and they follow an asymmetrical approach.

2. Consistency of the Use of Wood

One of the many things that you should notice in Chinese architecture is the predominance of wood. A reason behind this is the abundance availability of wood. Wood is used not only in the foundation of any structure but also to decorate ceilings, roofs, doors, and a lot more.

3. Defensive Walls

Whenever you visit Chinese historical sites, there is a chance that you might come across barrier walls. Multiple Chinese cities have walls surrounding them. These were mainly built to protect the towns from frequent invasions by several foreigners. These are more of a digital fortification.

4. Iconic Decoration

The decoration of any traditional Chinese building is enough to mesmerise you. Decorations found in the traditional buildings are intricate, colourful, and elegant. The decorations include spectacular windows, brilliant doors, striking door-knockers, remarkable wood carvings, and much more. The design and decoration is the central aspect of Chineses architectural structures.
