If you’re on the lookout for a bed, you should only be considering one that suits you. Instead of going with the trends, try and choose a bed that matches the vibe of your bedroom and, of course, your needs. However, before you purchase a bed, you must know the different designs and sizes of available beds.
Bed Sizes Explained
There are six-bed sizes to pick from – Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King. Here’s how they differ from one another:
- Twin: 75 inches long and 38 inches wide, twin mattresses are the smallest beds that money can buy. They work well for kids and single sleepers. Bunk beds typically feature twin mattresses. If space-saving is your priority, this is the bed size to buy.
- Twin XL: Twin XL mattresses are 80 inches long and 38 inches wide. These mattresses are slightly bigger than twin mattresses and are ideal for taller folk.
- Full: Full mattresses are 75 inches long and 53 inches wide. This is a good option for single sleepers who want a spaced out bed surface and for two kids. Two adults can fit themselves in as well, but it’s likely to feel a bit congested.
- Queen: Queen mattresses are 80 inches long and 60 inches wide, and they’re perfect for couples. They’re also the ideal mattresses for 10 x 10 feet master bedrooms.
- King: At 80 inches long and 76 inches wide, the King mattress is the widest there is. This is the most recommended mattress for couples with pets and/ or kids.
- Cal King: Cal King mattresses are 84 inches long and 72 inches wide. They are the longest mattresses that you can buy, and they’re perfect for people who are at least 6 feet tall. They can also comfortably fit a couple. However, Cal King mattresses aren’t suitable for couples with pets and/or kids.
Bed Designs to Pick from
Now that you know the various options you can buy from a size perspective, it’s time to take a look at things from a design perspective. While there are many different designs you can pick from, we’ll focus on the most popular designs in this section.
- Poster beds: Poster beds feature vertical posts rising up from every corner of the bed. There are subcategories as well, such as low poster beds, high poster beds, and pencil poster beds. This design is recommended for big bedrooms.
- Murphy beds: Murphy beds are also known as wall beds and pull-down beds. These beds can be folded, making them ideal for small bedrooms. Many Murphy bed designs also feature side-storage options.
- Daybed: Daybeds are what you need if versatility’s what you want. These beds work not only as beds, but can be transformed into benches and sofas as well.
Some of the other bed designs include waterbeds (meant for therapy), bookcase beds (with headboard bookshelves), panel beds (wooden panels for breathability), and round beds (ideal for lounge settings).
